1. A brief introduction:

The School of Biology has been a critical component of the University of Tehran since its inception in 1934. The Natural Science Program was established at the Faculty of Science in 1934, and the Department of Biology was founded in 1949. Since 2005, the Department of Biology has been known as the School of Biology in the College of Science under the University of Tehran in Tehran, Iran.

The School of Biology has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. It consists of five departments: Animal Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Plant Science, and Applied Biology. The school maintains a collection of various animal, plant, and microbial species in the Museum of Zoology, Herbarium, and Microbial Collection, respectively.

The School of Biology offers well-established programs at the Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels in basic, applied, and technological approaches to the life sciences. We offer 5 undergraduate programs that provide students with theoretical and practical (laboratory) courses to develop critical thinking skills for a professional or scientific career in all life science disciplines. Our 9 graduate programs provide graduate students with training opportunities in a supportive and rigorous research environment. As of May 2024, the School of Biology has 684 students and 34 faculty members.

The establishment of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Tehran was a response to the scientific, research, and practical needs of the country in the field of biological sciences. The main reasons and necessities for this initiative can be summarized as follows:

• With the increasing importance of biological sciences in areas such as health, environment, agriculture, biotechnology, and industry, the existence of a specialized center for education and research in this field at the country’s leading university became essential.
• The emergence of new diseases, environmental challenges, the need for the production of biological products, and the development of new technologies all require the training of specialized experts and researchers in biology.

Development of Specialized Education and Research

• Biology education in Iran began in 1928, and by 1934 it was recognized as an official field at the University of Tehran. As knowledge expanded and sub-disciplines became more specialized, the need for an independent and focused faculty was felt, enabling the provision of educational and research programs aligned with global developments.
• The establishment of the Faculty of Biology enabled the development of specialized fields such as cell and molecular biology, animal sciences, plant sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, genetics, and biological anthropology.
